What to Check Before Buying a Used Car in the UK
Buying a used car is exciting, but it’s also a significant financial commitment. The UK used car market is vast, and while there are many great cars out there, there are also plenty of lemons. Knowing what to check before you hand over any money is crucial.
1. The Paperwork Check
Before you even look at the car physically, you should check its history. The V5C (logbook) is the most important document. Ensure the seller is the registered keeper (or has the right to sell it if they are a dealer). Check the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) on the V5C matches the one on the car (usually found at the base of the windscreen or on the driver's door shut).
2. The History Check
A basic history check is essential. You need to know if the car has:
- Outstanding finance (if it does, the finance company owns it, not the seller).
- Been written off by an insurance company.
- Been reported stolen.
- Mileage discrepancies (clocking).
A Full Vehicle History Check may report available vehicle-history markers; coverage and update timing can vary, so use it alongside other checks.
3. The MOT History
The MOT history is a goldmine of information. Look for patterns of failures or recurring advisories. If a car consistently fails on tyres and brakes, it suggests the owner only fixes things when forced to, which implies poor general maintenance.
4. The Physical Inspection
When viewing the car, look for:
- Panel gaps: Uneven gaps between panels can indicate poor crash repairs.
- Paint finish: Look for differences in colour or texture, suggesting a respray.
- Tyres: Check the tread depth (legal limit is 1.6mm) and look for uneven wear, which could indicate alignment or suspension issues.
- Fluids: Check the oil (should be dark, not milky) and coolant (should be clear, not sludgy).
5. The Test Drive
Never buy a car without driving it. Ensure the engine starts from cold easily. Listen for unusual noises (knocks, rattles, whining). Check the steering is straight and the brakes stop the car smoothly without pulling to one side. Test all the electrics (windows, AC, radio).
